Bring Your Own Shoebox: Add a circuit to a shoebox doll house and learn about the circuits that run through the walls of your house. Then get creative--how will you diffuse the light? A toothpaste cap becomes a lampshade, a clear 3M hook doubles as a sconce, matchboxes can be decorated to serve as anything from beds to wall art. This program can result in a take-home project or a collaborative display. A digital project guide provides how-to instructions and supports assessment of connected learning goals.
Guided Professional Development (before hosting the activity): Educators will learn to use a vinyl cutter or laser cutter to transform affordable craft materials into modular components for use in public programs. Materials may include playing cards, felt, foam, duct tape, matchboxes, denim, and more. Once modified, these materials can be reused across many settings. They can also be included in take-home activities.
Included:
- 1-hour webinar, self-guided training module, and digital design files for library staff to prep for program facilitation
- Online/tablet-based tutorial to guide participants through the activity
- 2 sample projects included for workshop demonstration
- Source list for circuit materials and all craft materials. Typical cost per take-home project = $8. (Bring your own shoebox, or budget additional $2-4 for shoeboxes.)
Estimated materials cost to be budgeted separately:
- Typical cost per take-home project = $6.
- Participants bring a shoebox (or budget approx $1.50-$4 for craft shoeboxes). Staff can also collect shoeboxes ahead of the workshop
